I would say its a must. Since putting SSL on my site sales figures have improved.
I think with all the online fraud etc. Security is one of the first things people look for now. I know third party payment options such as Paypal take you on to their own secure site at checkout but most customers dont get that far if they dont see the logo.

Most web hosts now offer shared SSL for free I would say this is the minimum required
