Hello

I have installed Oscommers and reinstalled a couple of times but still getting this error

Hi Anthony

That error is caused by something being output to the browser before the session_start() function. It's been a while since I worked with osCommerce but if I remember correctly the two top include files are application_top.php and header.php. I would hazard a guess that you have something before the include statement for application_top.php which is sending a header to the browser therefore disabling the session_start() function.

One very common cause for this is having something before the first <?php on the page. Even a space or new line will cause this error. The first output to the browser should be in the header.php file, anything before that is likely to cause a problem. Remove any whitespace or anything that may have been inserted at the top of the source and make sure that the very first five characters on the page are <?php

If you can't find the problem, post the top few lines of your index.php file(down to the includes("includes/application_top.php") line) and I'll have a look at it for you.

Hi thanks for the reply i have checked for spaces but all look ok here is my index file it seems to do this on every page so i have included my header file might be useful

There's something a little odd about this error. On your homepage the error indicates that the source of the error is line one of index.php but every other page displays Cannot send session cookie - headers already sent by (output started at /home/aemson/public_html/beautyexpressonline/includes/functions/sessions.php:1) in /home/aemson/public_html/beautyexpressonline/includes/functions/sessions.php on line 97 which suggests that the problem is on line one of includes/functions/sessions.php. It's unlikely that anyone would need to edit this file, but check the the top of this file in case it's been corrupted.

If everything is ok with that, then go through every file that is called from application_top.php i.e. every file called by include or require statements. until you get down to require(DIR_WS_FUNCTIONS . 'sessions.php'); The error is somewhere between the top of application_top.php and line 97 of sessions.php. If you follow the program path line by line you will find the problem.

I think I know what's causing this. It's possible that you're having a problem with BOM (Byte Order Marks) encoding. If you view your site with Firefox, you'll notice a couple of foreign characters are output to the browser before the rest of the page. These characters are used to identify the UTF encoding that's being used. You need to remove these characters by saving your pages without BOM encoding.

This would explain why the error messages were suggesting that there's a problem with both index.php and sessions.php. Data is being sent to the browser before the start of every page.

Hi yes that does sound like it could be the problem, had a look at the link you sent but I couldn't make head nor tail of it I just starting out trying to learn more about this osc thanks Anthony

That site is written by geeks for geeks so isn't easy for the layman to understand but is invaluable for anyone wanting to get into PHP.

The problem isn't so much an OSC one but a PHP one. To resolve it, you'll probably have to open each page (not every file though) in your editor and save them without BOM encoding. In Dreamweaver, you can set this from edit/preferences. All the actual pages will need to be re-saved and any files that are called before the session_start() function is invoked such as sessions.php and configure.php. If you miss one, the error message will display which file is now causing the error, simply go though each one as it appears and save without BOM. That should rid you of the problem.

All sorted just changed my hosting and seems to have no problems now also think some of the problems were by Microsoft Expression Web Designer 2007 I have changed to Adobe Dreamweaver CS which i should have used in the first place lol
