To edit the actual files you need an FTP client.
Try FileZilla, once you've got it set up, it'll be like opening files from your own PC. You'll need to dig out the ftp server address, U/N and P/W to configure it.

It's like a webserver, but it allows you to interact directly with the files on the server. I've resent the email with your FTP details, use those details in the program I linked to above to edit the files on the server.

Yes, that's right. You need to download the file you want to edit before it can be opened. Double clicking the file will download and open it, so it'll be like opening a file on your own PC, but with a slight time delay.
