Default Home page text

Do people want to read all the gump we often put on our homepages ?

I have been looking around at different selling websites from small home ones to big retailers and im not sure if a customer wants to see a load of text on the homepage or even if it's needed...

I did notice some of the better know retailers had very little info on there page, they left all the info in the relevant pages, this is what has lead me to ask the question....

Whats your thoughts

I don't personally like to see too much text on the homepage and very rarely read it anyway but when designing your homepage you have two audiences to keep happy, real people and the search bots which often means you have to make some compromises to keep both happy.

The search bots want to see lots of text with relevant keywords scattered around, so bear this in mind when deciding what text to include on your homepage.

I don't like it but as its the first thing people see make it interesting, and search friendly as this is what the search engines are reading too. The larger sites don't need it as people are usually looking for their site in particular and thy have an established brand name.
