I've ben playing around with the template for my site, and i have come across to questions.
1- it there a way i can put a background image in the place of the solid colour (where the grey is), and
2- under the top bar where it say home and log in, how can i change that colour or just remove it.

To change those elements on your site, you need to edit. /includes/templates/classic/css/stylesheet.css

Near the top you will find the css for the body tag, change the start of it to look something like this. The line below will add a background image to your site.
Below is the URL for the image responsible for the horizontal grey line you want to get rid off, just replace this image with one that suites your needs. Note that this image is also used elsewhere such as at the bottom of the page so editing it will affect other parts of your site too. To edit the site so only the top grey line is changed will involve re-tagging some of the HTML and creating some new css.
