Hi, I'm setting up an ecommerce site & was wondering if we're requried to obtain a business license for online commerce sites?
Also I have no clue whether or not to charge tax for everyone or just those in my same state (CO)? Thanks! This looks like a great forum! ~Brennie |

I take it you are from the states?
I know Uk businesses don't require a license, although tobacco and alcohol etc I think require one, but I know when american retailers have contacted me in the past for bulk purchases they have always quoted their business reference number. There are a few members on here from the states so sure they will be able to help you. I have a feeling it may alldependon what type of products you intens to sell though?

That's an old post you're responding to so I have since found my answers. I will share what I have done.
![]() I am in the states, Colorado. I learned that I need to charge state tax to Coloradan customers only & everyone else is tax-free. I did not require a business license, but I did need an (optional) tax resale license if I wanted to purchase in bulk, which I did. Do you sell in bulk or wholesale? If so that's probably the number they give you - their resale tax license number. I sell homemade soy candles, votives, tealights, etc. It's been doing very well since that post (which was 2008) & we're growing nicely! Thanks for the post! ![]() |

Oh wow I just saw the date of your response is also 2008, but I just NOW got an email saying I had a response to my post! Wierd. Maybe the forums date setups are off-whack or something...

I've acquired expenses to help get my photography business started. I've kept every single receipt along the way. However, I do not yet have my business license. Can I still write off these expenses come tax time?
How about if I acquire my business license before this year ends? _________ Stack Exchange Updates |
