What would you choose?

I will be running the same information on each site. Would you redirect or just leave them as standalones? It will be easier to gain position in .co.uk, but longer term there is more fruit from .com.

It depends who your target market is. If it's the UK then make .co.uk your primary domain, if you are aiming for international sales then use a .com. (The physical location of your server is far more important than the domain extension for targeting a country though!) It'll be best to acquire both anyway to prevent someone else grabbing the other one as you'll always get someone type the wrong domain extension by mistake and end up on another site (probably your competitor's).

You don't need to redirect one to the other, you can park one on top of the other with a bit of DNS trickery so that sub directories will work with either domain. Another option is to install two separate sites to create a larger search engine footprint, if you're clever with the text used on each site this can bring in significantly more traffic.

One thing should be noted though, if you have an SSL cert it will only work for one of the domains so you'll need to either purchase a 2nd cert or switch from your secondary domain to your primary one during registration, checkout etc.

Note that if you try to register on the .co.uk domain your get a certificate error. They could get around his by forwarding all SSL .co.uk requests to .com but they haven't.

Understand exactly what your saying. Thing is that initially we want to focus on the uk, but then in time include world.

Looks like it's a case of doing bothy - big old search engine footprint coming up......
