One of the most important directories to list your site on is http://www.dmoz.org, Many of the top search engines including Google consult DMOZ for their own directories.

It's very slow to update so expect to wait several months before being listed, but when/if you are included, it will help your SE ranking.

It takes a while to get listed on Dmoz as they actually use a 'real' person to check your site first believe. Its also known as the open directory isn't it?
