The great Page Rank swindle.
You will often see sites boasting that they have great Page Rank to encourage you to pay for a link from them in the hope that some of their PR is passed down to your own site, but think about it, it's called PAGErank. It's called page rank for a reason and that reason is because it only affects that page not the rest of the site otherwise Google would call it Site Rank.
If your link is placed on a high ranking page then thats all good, but often you will find particularly with link directories that the homepage has a reasonable PR of four or above but the actual rank of the page where your link is placed is PR0. If your motivation for wanting a link on a site is purely for PR purposes then look at the link page and not the homepage of the site. Some of these sites also add the "no follow" attribute to their links meaning that no PR will be passed down the line to you so the only benefit you might gain are referred hits.
It's also a common misconception that Page Rank and traffic are connected. This is false, PR is a way of calculating how many links & the PR of those links you have pointing your site which doesn't necessary mean that the higher the PR the higher the traffic flow.
Page Rank can help with search engine placement, but it is by no means the Holy Grail that some make it out to be.
Page Rank is for vanity, SERPs is for sanity.
