It's no secret that Google dislikes unauthorised automated requests on their servers. Are they breaking the 3rd party Page Rank checking tools?

Surely if you have the google toolbar downloaded though it doesn't matter as this checks pagerank doesn't it? I wouldn't give any value to predictions as how can anyone possibly know what google will do next?

Not everyone has the Google toolbar installed and some people flatly refuse to install it or any other toolbar.

The sites affected aren't prediction sites, they're Page Rank checking sites that query Google's own servers. They seem to be trying to make it more difficult for other sites to access the information.

So what, I wouldn't be surprised if G is breaking the tools. There has been a lot of speculation that PR is going to stop or at least be hidden, which may stop the classic "I want a link from you but only from a page with a PR of X or above" link exchange emails I keep getting.

Page rank doesn't mean your site is good or that it generates lots of income.

Remember PR is vanity, SERPS is sanity.

But PR does have one purpose, it keeps a whole army of bloggers in business speculating about the Google algo for it.

I've also heard rumours that Yahoo are going to put Trust Rank on their toolbar, though there's so many rumours in the SEO community you never know what or who to believe. I've found that it's best to take most of the speculation with a large pinch of salt.

I've never noticed a change in traffic or SERPs when the PR of a site has changed, the only difference is that the number of link exchange requests increases exponentially with every PR point you gain.

I noticed the link in your sig earlier and gave it a try, I thought it was pretty good. I've come across a few PR checking sites that no longer work, and there is chat on some of the SEO forums and blogs (as mentioned in OP) about Google deliberately breaking them, but yours seems to be unscathed.

Couldn't agree more, we got our very first eCommerce shop to p1 of Google with a PR of 1. It really does seem like an exercise in vanity, although I'm sure there must be a purpose for it other than to keep SEO 'experts' in business
