Hi Leon,
Your first step is to choose what type of service you want. There are a couple of distinctive choices for you, each with pros and cons: 1. Open Source As mentioned earlier you could use open source eCommerce software. The software itself is free to use, cheap to host and feature rich. There are large online support communities in forums through which you can pick up advice and even find help. The downside is it can require some basic programming skills to customise it and give your shop a distinctive appearance. 2. Hosted Shops Companies like our own provide hosted eCommerce shops. This is a bit like renting office space, you own your web address, shop branding and contents but rent the mechanics of the shop which make it work. Hosted shops are a low-cost and low-risk way of getting up and running with an online shop with no tie-in period meaning you can stop at any time. Some companies like ours are set up to help first time online shop owners with unlimited telephone and email support and advice when you want it. However, if you want to move your shop elsewhere in the future then you will need to have a new shop created, you can't just move your hosted shop to a new hosting service. 3. Ebay Ebay is still an excellent way to trial retail ideas, offload slow moving stock and build up a retail brand. It has a massive captive audience and at this time of year it would be a great idea to get a shop set up in their market place. Unfortunately Ebay's fees having been rising steadily, they have recently made changes to their feedback system for the worst and as a result are experiencing their first slowdown in auction listings since they were created. 4. Custom Built Shop This option will give you everything you need from your shop. You can specify what functionality you need, the exact way it should work and end up owning your shop and its mechanics outright to host wherever you want. For this amount of flexibility there is a cost. Good web design companies charge anywhere from £1k to £10k for a custom designed website. We've an article here on how to open your own eCommerce shop, hope it helps!

If your budget is $400 or more then I would suggest going with one of the big ecommerce companies ( 3dcart, volusion, networksolutions) and paying them for design.
If your budget is less than that, then just go to elance or getafreelancer and hire an overseas web designer for a couple hundred bucks. |

I had to ban Volusion from this forum for spamming!
