Default Problems installing shop-script

I've been trying to install shop-script on my laptop. When I'm asked which folder I want to install it in I put 'http://localhost/' (without the quotes) but get an error message saying http:\\localhost\ does not exist and would I like it created. I can't get past this part.

I asked shop-script support about this and got the following reply

Quote:
Errors encountered during Shop-Script installation with Windows Installer could be caused by many different factors, like incompatibility with some server
Does anyone know how I can sort this out? Also, can anyone recommend a open source shopping cart which a newcomer to php and mysql can figure out? I bought a good book last Saturday - PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites - so I can look up anything which I don't understand I'm ok with css so I shouldn't have too many problems with layout changes.

To run php script on localhost(home computer or laptop), requires
php/mysql and Apache..you can install all those seperately or use
package such as WAMP or XAMPP..
i.e.
http://www.en.wampserver.com/
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
then try ZenCart, as their forums are very helpful and
comes with FAQ/Tutorials.
i.e.

I've got Apache, PHP and mysql on my laptop, all configured ok, so that's not the problem. I've even tried uninstalling shop-script and downloading it again, but it made no difference.

Thanks for trying to help anyway. I'm going to have to find an alternative.

Have you tried giving it a physical address on your HDD rather than trying to install it to localhost?

It sounds as if it's trying to install files to the file system hence the change from forward slashes "/" to backward slashes "\" in the error message. localhost should be used for configuring the S/W and accessing it via a browser, not as an address for installing files.

Thanks for clarifying this for me. I may have another go with shop-script when I finally manage to debug the script I'm working on
