Exclamation Trying to prevent image theft with no right click scripts.

If you want to prevent someone from lifting images from your site then do not use a "no right click script". Many people use the right click button for site navigation and the installation of one of these scripts is annoying to say the least. It's also likely to turn people away from your site which is the last thing you want to do when trying to sell your wares to them.

Besides, they won't stop anyone but the most novice of internet users from taking your images if they wanted to. There are many ways to defeat these scripts, the easiest of which is to simply left click on the image and drag it on to your desktop! It really is that easy to defeat!

Even image slicing (Constructing an image from multiple parts) won't stop it from happening. All a user has to do is take a screen dump and remove the image with his graphics software.

The most effective deterrent is to watermark your images, though even this doesn't deter some of the more unscrupulous auction sellers from using your images to sell their goods it will deter many.

One thing you can do to reduce the amount of image theft is to add these lines to your robots.txt file.

User-agent: Googlebot-Image
Disallow: /

This will prevent your images from being displayed on Google's image SERPs

You need to use a graphics program to edit the image.

You can either place a visible URL on the image as a deterrent to others which has the benefit of advertising your site if they do decide to use it, though often they will black this out. The downside is that it can look unattractive on your images if not done well. An example of acceptable watermarking is the logo that eBay adds to uploaded images on its site.

It is possible to add an invisible watermark to an image that can only be read by S/W though this won't deter people from using the image, it just means that you can prove that it is yours if you catch them.

I'd strongly recommend using the robots.txt method to stop people from Googling your images if this is a problem for you.

Thanks I will look at the robots.txt again. I thought I had already done this but doesn' look like it.

You have

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/images/

in your robots.txt file which doesn't actually do anything because you're not using your CGI-Bin. If you were using a Perl based cart such as Agora then this may have worked but not in your case. You can safely delete these lines and replace them with the ones I posted above.
