Default Zencart and hosting

Hi

We have a shop that uses quite old software (ecbuilder), so no wonder our vistors are going down in numbers. I'm a fairly good learner & I've done some tweaking in html, so I think I can manage Zencart. But a couple of questions, if I may...

1) If a host offers free zencart I assume that means it's pre-installed. Will I be able to use add-ins eg uk post service?
2) Mine If it doesn't offer this, so I have tried to upload my own version, but I cannot install it because I am on a server where safemode setting is on. Will that be the same with all hosts?
3) Would buying my own server space be the only way round 2) (I'd rather keep the cost down).
4) Would I be able to my own logo on the banner at the top (is that called skinning?

Thanks for any help, Chris

  1. Yes
  2. No, not all hosts use safe mode. Safe mode is a royal pain in the a*** and should be avoided as it's like working with shackles on.
  3. Having your own server space is the only recommended way to do it. Using a package that crams sites into directories then forwards the domain on to them is a false economy and you will soon regret it. You can get webspace suitable for Zen for about £50/yr.
  4. You can use any banner you want at the top.

1. Free pre-installed zencart is NOT a good idea.
2. Zencart website has list if recommended zencart hosts.
3. Can purchase very reasonably priced hosting packages.
(Send Lawrence PM)
4. Yes, you can have your own logo and template

Why is a pre-installed zancart not a good idea?

also, what about other pre-installed programmes used by web-hosting hosts not "good idea"?

thanks.
