Default CHKDSK hanging on stage 2 of 3 (verifying indexes) ~ Kaspersky

I am having a problem when doing a disk check and it keeps hanging on stage 2 of 3 which is verifying indexes, it says 0 percent and doesn't move on where as before it would whizz through all 3 checks.

I've just had this reply from support at Kapersky which is like double dutch to me.

http://support.kaspersky.com/kav7/error?qid=208279501

and on the forums is a note about this problem

http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php...0&#entry418270

I don't understand all this stuff and I'm not sure I should be fiddling around in things that were running okay prior to using KIS. It states in the top link that "in order to resolve such problems Kaspersky Labs experts recommend launching the service CHKDSK with the /I switch from the command line" but doesn't tell me how to do this.

I don't have a clue what to do next, and I do like to run the disk check periodically to keep this running properly but am not happy about going into things and fiddling.

<waits for my knight in shining armour to come and help me>

Lawrence

Hi Octopia

To run CHKDSK on the command line use the run command from the start menu then type "chkdsk /i" in the box.

How can you be absolutely sure that it's a problem with Kaspersky? It can be caused by a multitude of things. One thing that is worth checking is the available space on your drive. If it's running very low then it's worth having a clear out. I've found that Kaspersky log files can be huge with certain settings, it's worth checking them and deleting the older ones to free up some space as well as clearing out some of the usual suspects such as the temp internet files.

Personally I don't run the likes of CHKDSK unless I suspect a problem, which is usually no more than twice a year. Excessive use only exerts unnecessary strain on your drive and will reduce it's life span.

If you find it still won't complete, boot Windows in Safe Mode (Press F8 while booting) and try it from there.

Welcome back.

Thank you I'll print this out and give it a go.

I have loads of space over 3 drives and the one I use is the c drive (19.5 full and 58.0 free). I delete the temp files regularly but have never thought to delete the log files, so I'll have a look later for them and delete the old ones.

I don't do this a lot but didn't realise this so I'll only do it from now when I think there could be a problem.

Didn't know this so I'll print this out and keep this too

Thank you for explaining it all so that I can understand it.

Take care
