Default Error Message: MOM.EXE -.NET Framework Initializing Error

Hi Laurence

I do pop on and have a read of the forums and I don't just post computer problems, honest

It's a long story and I've tried lots of things and the error message is still coming up.

I have Windows XP and Kaspersky.

My son decided to download a demo game and with this game it wouldn't let him download unless he agreed to downloading STEAM, which apparently allows downloads of games more easily.

He set it all up yesterday and it played fine and computer was fine but it was only today when the computer had been off and restarted it came up with the following error:-

MOM.EXE _.NET Framework Initialization Error
To run this application you must first install one of the following versions
of the .NET Framework v2.0.50727

screenshot:- http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=7x8hijr&s=1

With the error appeared a box called Steam and I just closed this box.

The game he downloaded was from here:-

http://videogames.yahoo.com/pc/enemy...rs/file-529579

I checked online and came up with this page about the error:-

http://www.file.net/process/mom.exe.html

which said it was a catalyst control center: monitoring programe by ATI
Technologies Inc (www.ati.com).

I've searched ati.com and can't find out anything but I checked Add/Remove
programmes and I've got there four things for ati:-

ATI Software uninstall utility
ATI AVIVO codecs
ATI Catalyst control center
ATI Display driver

I don't know if we put ATI on our computer or if it came with the gubbings in the computer

I've looked at the add and remove programmes and have the following there:-

Microsoft .NET framework 1.1
Microsoft .NET framework 1.1 Hotfix (kb928366)

I've tried a couple of things but the error is still there:-

Uninstalled from add/remove programmes the game.
Uninstalled from add/remove programmes steam.
Searched to see if any of the above was left and deleted a few folders left in search.
Searched to see if anything was left for Steam and there is (screenshot)

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6s9v8f5&s=1

but ... I don't know what I can delete and what I can't on this.

I just tried putting these items (steam) in bin without emptying it and did a restart but the error still appeared, so I've restored them just in case.

I've also done a system restore to prior my son downloading this demo and steam, did a restart and the error is still there but I'm not getting the steam box come up.

I'm stumped now ... the computer seems to be okay and has been working fine but this error shouldn't appear.

Please can you tell me how to fix this ...

Should I delete the items left by steam and will that fix the problem (all bar one seems to be in ati support and one is a pretech?

Should I download the version that .net framework wants? It didn't want it before this game was downloaded and I wouldn't know where to find it and if I should download it.

This error didn't appear until after my son downloading this game and he's now been told that he is NEVER to download another demo game ever. I have to take some of the blame because I initially said no then changed my mind.

I'm online for a little longer but will check back tomorrow when I'm hoping that Laurence aka has sorted this out for me. (did I mention how clever he is and charming )

Thanks

Octopia

Hi Octopia

You could easily have resolved this problem by installing a later version of the .NET framework.

You can get v2 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...latedDownloads

and v3 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...kInfoContainer

I suggest installing v3.

The ATI stuff is your graphics card drivers and associated files and would have come with the PC unless you installed a graphics card after purchasing the PC. If you delete any of these files you may loose some functionality so I wouldn't recommend it. You should have an ATI CD/DVD that came with your PC for restoring the files in case of a problem, though downloading the latest versions from the ATI website would be wiser.

I imagine that what the game did was update some of your ATI files to the latest versions which require a more up to date .NET framework than you have installed, hence why you are still getting a warning message when you reboot.

There are two ways to rid yourself of the error, reinstall the older versions of the ATI files, or update your .NET framework. I suggest you do the latter.

BTW Can you please address your questions to the forum as a whole as there are other people on here who can help you. Not that I mind the flattery though

Apologies to everyone and I won't do it again ...

Thanks Lawrence, I'm just going to print it all off now and follow your instructions.

I followed the instructions above and downloaded v3 and when it had installed I got a message telling me to check for updates, I did check and these are the upates that came up (screenshot).

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=85zx6pe&s=1

I updated and restarted the computer and then got this error message (screenshot)

http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=6yzo4de&s=1

I'm stumped now what I need to do ...

Would it help downloading this game again with the steams bit and would this fix the new error?

If I then keep the steams bit but take off the demo game would this fix it?

Thanks

Octopia

Downloading it again might fix the problem, if it doesn't then I suggest going to the ATI site and downloading the latest drivers and software for your graphics card.

I'll have a go now and download it again. I'm presuming that the steams bit will overcopy itself.

If this doesn't work I had found a page about drivers but didn't know what bit to do ....

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

I know its a radeon but not sure how to find out which one it is ??

Thank you.

It should overwrite itself, though if it finds remnants of a previous install it might through a wobbly (that's the technical term for it).

To see which graphics card you're using, right click anywhere on your desktop, select properties then the settings tab.

It's downloading now and will take awhile so I'll leave it running then install.

I've just found out by doing the above that I have a ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 SERIES but after clicking the driver link, xp home/professional, radeon I can't find the 200 series.

Hopefully the download will fix it ... bet you wished I hadn't joined this forum now

Someone thought your post was interesting.

http://www.gamesandgames.info/26062/...alizing-error/

Before you feel overly flattered, it's a MFA (Made For AdSense) site. They grab content from other sites and place it on there own in the hope it will attract search engine traffic resulting in clicks on their ads. Please don't click any of their ads, it will only encourage them.

The only benefit this site receives from it, is a non NoFollow link (for all that is worth from such a site), a favour that I didn't reciprocate with the above link.

I'm now getting so many of these, it's getting ridiculous

It's still downloading, going to take hours by the look of it.

I've been reading up but still can't find the right driver update, but hopefully I won't need it.

Once, hopefully, this error is sorted if it helps you can delete this post?

Sorry to be a pest.
