Gogoshopper, the US coupon website which helps shoppers find deals online, has provided an insight into e-commerce shopping trends through analysing their user-data and cross-referencing that with information that is in the public domain. The website, gogoshopper.com, helps consumers to save big when buying from a wide variety of retailers including amazon.com, walmart.com, target.com and macys.com. Among their findings, small retailers that were breaking into the computer accessory and electronics market, through competing on price, have now suffered as the big players have become more competitive. They also revealed that women are now spending more than men online, and that January through to May is the slowest time for online merchants in terms of total sales figures.

Their statistics suggest that Christmas is the time where the vast majority of retailers hit peek sales figures ? with revenue appreciation taking a steep jump following thanksgiving. Following the Christmas period, sales figures slow all the way through to May. Some retailers, such as Walmart and Target, hit another high during the month of May. Companies that do particularly well during the summer months include Home Depot, Just Blinds Inc, and shoe retailers such as shoebuy.com and shoemall.com.

Overall, online spending has increased significantly over the past two years. Some retailers that have performed particularly well over the past year include Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom and American Eagle Outfitters. Beauty and jewelery merchants have also seen strong growth, with analysts attributing this trend towards increased confidence among consumers in completing larger transactions online. Companies that have benefited from this trend include Jewelry Television, Blue Nile, Ice.com and Drugstore.com.

The profile of the computer accessory and electronics market has changed greatly over the past year. New retailers entered the market, and gained initial traction through competing heavily on price. This forced larger retailers, such as buy.com and newegg.com, to price more keenly, causing smaller retailers to be acquired or go out of business.

Some of these findings, such as the post-Christmas slump, are already known to UK traders, but other noted trends are worth thinking about.
