Newly released stats from the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), the trade association for the internet marketing industry within the UK.
Online activity in the UK:
There are now 30.9 million people with online access comprising 66% of the total GB adult population. 83% of current Internet users have been online for at least 3 years and 12.5 million people have access to the internet during working hours. The sites most visited continue to be those offering products or services.
Favourite online activities:
Email 26.1 million.
Sourcing information on activities and interests 22.8 million.
Arranging travel 16.7 million.
Cinema/theatre/concert listings/tickets 14.1 million.
Searching job opportunities 12.2 million.
UK Broadband uptake:
10.2 million households in the UK have a broadband connection, comprising 89% of all internet users, up from 80% twelve months ago. Broadband users spend double the length of time online as do users on dial-up, they also view three times as many web-pages. Broadband penetration is expected to continue rising.
Length of time spent on the Internet per user:
58% of Internet users go online every day. Average time spent online per week is 23 hours. Average length of each online session is 53 minutes.
Online advertising:
The UK online advertising industry spend is valued at £2,015.8 billion, indicating an 11.4% share of the UK advertising industry.
Online shopping:
£30.2 billion was spent online during 2006 and 19.7 million people now shop online confidently, spending an average amount of £652 each in the last six months of 2006. It is anticipated that by 2011 32 million UK consumers will shop online, the value of the goods they buy adding up to near £52 billion.
