What were your previous conversion rates for your AdWords?

With careful planning they can be effective, there's no point using them for key phrases that you already rank highly for, save them for the words that you don't do so well on with little competition. The key to AdWords success is a combination of science and voodoo!

I've been given a ?70 AdWords voucher by my hosts that is due to expire soon. I would have preferred to have waited until the forum was more established before using it, but it's a case of use it or lose it. So we will have an AdWords campaign running shortly. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

The problem i have with all these things is the time it takes to monitor things and evaluate. I need the time to paint!

Ken, it's not monitoring these things that takes up your time. It's your forum addiction!

I have them set to only display on the SERPs as I'm too aware of how simple it is to commit click fraud. It's far too easy for a webmaster to get his friends/members to click the ads to raise a bit of revenue.

Apart from the trouble with the kids clicking them, how did you find they performed compared to those placed on the SERPs?

The content sites didn't really generate sales from what I could see. In fact most of my sales occur when adwords isn't running as I have played about a bit with different times of the day etc. For a lot of my things I would imagine customers would type in something specific and I am doing quite well with ranking in these.I also choose carefully where I advertise to reach my target audience. I just need to move up with some main keywords now

While checking the progress of this site on the SERPs, I noticed huge differences in positioning due to the frequency of some of the words. The site I used only checks the first ten pages of Google's SERPs so the really useful phrases that people are likely to search for aren't showing yet.

What I did to test the effect of word frequency was to add various user's names to the search because the more someone posts, the more their name appears on the site. These are some of the phases I found appeared on the first ten result pages with the position next to the name. Note that the phrases where I included the word "Lawrence" came higher than the same phrases using other user's names with less posts. I got this data from http://www.rnk1.com/

eshop forums 1
eshop forum 5
ecommerce forum 409
ecommerce forums 99
zencart forum 395
madhatter 371
ecommerce lawrence 4
ecommerce blush 356
ecommerce kate 287
eshop lawrence 1
eshop blush 11
eshop blushfashions 1
eshop kate 10
eshop nick 7
eshop debs 3
edible graphics 205
blushfashions 500

We seem to be doing very well with "eshop", now all I need you to do is keep using the word "ecommerce" in your posts When I get the chance I'll check these phrases again to see how they are progressing and hopefully add some more to the list that weren't listed on the first ten pages the first time I checked them.

Hi, Lawrence
adwords is a great tool, some say critical, think that's a bit strong, but it definitely helps.
It really depends on what you are advertising, competition etc, also what keywords you use, how compelling your advert is, bidding strategies etc...there could be...if there isn't already a whole forum discussing just this topic.
If you aren't currently doing so, you need to use google analytics to fine tune your site.
In terms of adwords, try this link Keyword assistant. This will give you an approximate idea of how many people search for the keywords you are looking to bid on per month. You need analytics to determine your conversion rates of visitor to user, how much an average user is worth to you in profit....well you don't have to, but it helps!....generally speaking use as targeted keywords as possible, and long tail, to increase conversion rates and reduce keyword cost.
I could go on indefinitely about this and other marketing strategies, probably the best thing to do is look at the adwords guides, search the internet for a bit, then dive in and commit before your voucher runs out!
Start off small with bids, find which keywords are converting and increase your position on those.
Hope this helps?

This is probably the best one https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal but it's just too addictive. I can waste away hours trying different word combinations.

Analytics is another one I waste far too much time on. Every time I visit the site I find a hidden feature I didn't know was there before. I'd recommend it to anyone but be prepared to spend more time than you can afford checking out all the different stats.
