Default How much does a .com domain cost?

A simple question you may ask. About ?20 for two years? Think again!

I was looking at the croydon.com domain as I could see potential for selling advertising space to local companies. It is currently held by a company called Sedo who were inviting offers for it. I figured If I offer ?75 I might get it eventually for around ?300, an extortionate price but it would probably pay for itself. I made the offer and waited to see what their reply would be.

Are you ready for this?

?45,000!!! What do you think of that?

Out of curiosity to see what they would come back with, I've made a 2nd offer of ?95 I'll let you know what their reply is.

I've received a reply

I suspect I'm bidding against a bot, I shall try £1 increments to see what happens

On that basis if it goes down ?500 a time youwill be up to around ?190. Since Croydon is UK why not Croydon.co.uk

I tried the croydon.co.uk domain first but that was already being used and was surprised to see that croydon.com was actually "available". This is the latest update on my quest to obtain the domain.

I think they got bored with my biding and stopped replying after my last bid. I won't be surprised if I leave it a few days they come back with another offer. No one is ever going to pay anything like that sort of money for a Croydon domain, it's crazy pricing though I suppose if they use this selling strategy on all their domains they only need 1 customer in 1000 to make a purchase to make a large profit.

Anyone want to give me ?10,000 for tazstores.co.uk? LOL

They came back to me today with another offer for ?44,500. They obviously think that the domain is worth something to someone so it'll be interesting to see what eventually happens to it.

$5000! For Sedo that's a positive bargain!

I reckon with the Croydon one they are gambling on the fact that every few years Croydon applies for city status and if it gets it then it's profile will rise considerably. I can't see it ever happening though, it's far to close to London.

I typed in blushfashion in error, I forgot the s
and look what I found
http://www.blushfashion.com/
similar to sedo I think
but look what the cheeky beggars have done.down the right handside they have blushfashions to click on
only when you click on it it takes you to sites using my name for something completely else!

by the way, lawrence why do you want Croydon.com, what on earth is in Croydon like?

What's in Croydon?

Apart from the chavs? (This song sums that side of Croydon up very well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2VcKTYAw7E Also check out Wikipedia for the term "Croydon Facelift" )

There's loads of local businesses that would be willing to pay for advertising space on such a named site. The domain does have some value but certainly not in the range of £40,000+. It would be interesting to see how far they would have been willing to come down if I'd started bidding larger amounts but I wasn't going to risk bidding more than I was prepared to pay just in case they said yes!

I might try again and go up to about £300 just out of curiosity to see if they start dropping the price by more reasonable amounts though I doubt they'd settle for anything less than five figures.

Has anyone had experience with dealing with these domain brokers before?

No to be honest I would rather pick a different domain name then give those bloodsuckers a single penny!

I received an email today informing me that the owner of this domain has put it up for public auction. It'll be interesting to see if he'll get anything near the £45,000 he was originally looking for.
